It was the property manager who noticed first. She called Vera to say the lease had been recalculated at renewal and was she aware she had been underpaying by sixty-two dollars a month for three years. Vera had not been aware of this because Vera had not been aware that she was forty-three, which she discovered when she did the math on the lease renewal date and compared it to her birth year and found a one-year discrepancy that she could not account for.
She called her mother, who confirmed that the birth year on her ID was correct and that she had always seemed a little young for her age. Vera sat with this for a day. She had been making decisions, for three years, as a person one year younger than she was. She had been making plans as that person. She had been telling herself things were not urgent yet, that there was more time, based on an age that turned out to be wrong.
She paid the back rent, which felt appropriate. The recalibration of her plans took longer. She found she could not simply add a year and continue. The plans themselves needed to be looked at again, because they had been built by someone who had more time than she did, and she was not sure that person's plans were still hers.
