Brigitte Sola, 34, deep-sea salvage diver who has worked wrecks in the North Atlantic, the South China Sea, and the Mediterranean. She keeps a handwritten registry of every ship she has entered underwater, including its name in every language it was known by, its last port of call, and the depth at which she found it. She does not photograph the wrecks. She says photographs flatten what is three-dimensional about silence.
