STORY APPROVED
Thomas had a memory that did not decay. Specific episodic events, he had told Dr. Reeves at their first session, stayed with him at full resolution for decades. Not his general knowledge, which was normal, but events: conversations, rooms, what the light had been doing. He could recall the first session with Dr. Reeves in as much detail as it was currently happening, which made certain kinds of therapeutic progress difficult to measure. Dr. Reeves had done her research. She knew the standard presentation and she knew the standard problems: difficulty with self-narrative, challenge in integrating old experiences as past rather than perpetually present, the fatigue of a world that accumulated without resolution. What she had not anticipated was how clearly Thomas remembered her, session by session, in a way that made the usual asymmetry of the therapeutic relationship visible in an unusual way. He remembered exactly what she had said. She remembered approximately. By the sixth month she had become more precise in her language, knowing it would be retained. She had also, she admitted to her supervisor, become slightly more careful in her life outside the sessions, knowing that anything she referred to in session would be kept. Her supervisor said this was within the normal range of therapeutic impact. Dr. Reeves was not certain it was normal. She continued the sessions and became, she thought, a slightly more accurate person for the effort.
